I had just settled, ready to start my meditation practice. Oscar (pic below) was in his customary position. I like to close my eyes for the first few breaths, it helps me focus. A loud buzzing sound passed my head. Normally I would ignore it, but Oscar was having none of it. He really does not like things that fly, including aeroplanes. I looked over towards the window, where the sound had last come from. Bloody hell, that must be a hornet, I thought. I paused my timer and hastily headed off to the kitchen (making Oscar follow me) to get a glass.

I returned to find a huge blue bottle buzzing at the window, but no sign of the hornet. I let out the fly and cautiously started moving the curtains. Still no sign. I noticed Oscar was sniffing around by the piano stool. I carefully got down to look. To my relief, it was not a hornet at all, just a strange looking moth.
The poor thing was trapped in a web, thrashing furiously to escape. I watched as a large daddy long legs spider crept down towards the moth. The spider retreated whilst the moth was thrashing, then moving back in when still. I’m not sure if this was moving in for the kill or attaching more web. Either way, circumstances were not looking good for the moth.
For the next couple of minutes, I watched this sorrowful situation continue. Should I intervene or not? I thought. Should I free the moth? Depriving the spider of some perhaps much-needed sustenance. Or, should I let nature take its course?
Just as I had decided on the latter, the struggling of the moth finally paid off and it broke free. My conscience was immediately eased. I had let nature take its course and the moth was free – hoorah! I turned to grab the glass, I thought I might as well let it go free outside. Oscar lurched forward and snap, the moth was no more. Nature is extremely bipolar. Bringing forth life in all its glory, diversity and beauty. Only to devour it again. Such is life…
What would you have done in the same situation? Do you think I should have intervened?
As a side note, am I the only person who thought dilemma was spelt dilemna?
Be happy, healthy and helpful
