#MindfulMay 2020 - Day 18.

Full disclosure… I completely forgot about today’s exercise. It seemed disingenuous to head back to the bathroom and brush my gnashers again. Instead, I made my morning coffee mindfully. In some ways, this is usually, even more of a mindless activity for me. It runs like a clever little algorithm in my mind when I get the “call for caffeine” (that would be the name of my boutique coffee shop by the way).

I weighed the kettle to assess there was sufficient water. I have no idea why they bother with that fill level thing, I thought. Click, on she goes. I had no idea I had a female kettle until this morning. But let’s not wander down the gender social construct road just now. I attempt to rinse out the cafetiere (coffee pot) but the kitchen sink is full of dishes, so I head into the laundry room. I felt how much warmer it is in there, it houses the boiler. I spot a blackbird through the window on the back lawn. How the light falls at this time of day, he has no idea I am there. An orange beak full of bugs and off he goes.

Coffee pot clean, I headed back into the kitchen where the kettle has boiled. I open the coffee and take in the aroma. Part of the ritual is a certain type of coffee; it has a chocolatey smokiness that I love. Today, I took a second sniff after pouring the hot water into the pot, preloaded with a heaped spoonful of the caffeine-laden powder. The chocolate is almost completely consumed by the smoke. With the timer set for 4 minutes, I usually toddle off to do something else. Not this morning though, I am going to just wait. My mental to-do list started to call me. I thanked it for the reminders and stood staring out the window at the blue sky, no thoughts, just waiting. Almost on cue, Mr Blackbird was back and the alarm went off. I found the sound of slowly pouring the coffee into a mug very satisfying.

Fancy a coffee now? I know I do! I doubt brushing my teeth again would have motivated me to brush my teeth again...

Be happy, healthy and helpful
