#MindfulMay 2020 - Day 15.

This turned into a much deeper and more consuming challenge that I expected. It started with the question, “what are my core beliefs?” So that I could pick the opposing belief and try it on, so to speak. An hour or so in, I still had a largely blank piece of paper and a growing anxiety in my stomach. Surely, I should know what my core beliefs are? Do you know yours?

I did, what I imagine most of us do these days and consulted the Oracle, I mean internet. I find it hard to imagine what life would be like without it. After a couple of false starts on a popular search engine and an hour so reading material I found this brilliant article. I am sharing it so that you don’t have to go through the same pain.

It turns out that most of us earthlings do not know our core beliefs either. I went through the exercises thoroughly. There was a clear theme. Most of my core beliefs are positive. I have positive beliefs about myself, other people, and the world in general. I have a wonderful childhood and family to thank for that. This threw light on something I think of now as a kind of meta-belief, “there is no benefit not being positive.”

In line with today’s challenge, I tried on the opposite belief i.e. “there is no benefit in being positive”. To say this felt strange does not quite cover it. It felt all wrong. Far worse than not knowing what my core beliefs are. It has given me a much deeper appreciation for anyone who has negative beliefs about themselves. I define negative as a belief that does not serve you. Trying to change a belief of any type is a colossal challenge, much greater than any for #MindfulMay. Although, I would not know that without taking on today’s challenge.

Be happy, healthy and helpful

Paul
